Anglo Celt Article- Wednesday 4th June 2014

The Cavan Senior Open was held in Cavan Tennis Club from Monday 19th to Sunday 25th May. The ninety tennis players who competed over the course of the week came from many local and not so local clubs including Kells, Longford, Granard, Monaghan, Enniskillen, Irvinestown, Mullingar, Manorhamilton, Limerick and Castleknock. The twelve events which took place over the week were contested by a wide range of players, some playing the sport for less than a year, others who have been playing the sport for considerably longer. Throughout the week, players competed in singles, doubles and mixed doubles events, sometimes playing as many as two matches an evening. For the most part, the weather was good and allowed for some great quality tennis to be played.

The week culminated in finals day on Sunday. Perhaps the highlight of the day was the Mens’ Singles A Final between Richard Foley from Virginia and Matthew McGann from Enniskillen. Richard Foley is currently on a tennis scholarship in Texas while Matthew McGann has only recently returned from representing Ireland at the World Team Championship in Florida where he earned a world ranking of 530 in the Over-40s category. Spectators were treated to a ferocious contest between the two men which was eventually won by Richard Foley 6-3 3-6 6-3.

Cavan LTC’s own members were well represented on Finals Day too with all- Cavan finals in both the Ladies’ Singles and Mens’ Singles B. The Ladies’ Singles final was contested by Kate O’ Gorman and Orla Malone. Kate showed a substantial reserve of energy after winning a marathon semi-final against fellow club member, Gayle Anderson, which took an astonishing four hours and twenty five minutes only the day before. Orla Malone, who had her hands full organising the tournament, eventually won the final 6-4 6-4. The Mens’ Singles B final was contested by Cavan LTC members Petr Vrtanik and Cathal Sheridan. It was an exhausting final for both men which was eventually won by our mens’ club captain, Cathal Sheridan, 6-4 5-7 6-4. Following the conclusion of this match, both men had just a short break before competing in doubles finals.

Different skills were on display in the numerous doubles finals which took place. The Mens’ A Doubles final was contested by two teams from Mullingar Tennis Club. Declan Breen and Fergus Murphy won the title for an impressive fourth year in a row defeating Ger Dowling and Colm Murphy 6-1 6-2. Disappointment was only temporary for Ger and Colm though who won the Mens’ B Doubles Final against Petr Vrtanik and Bruce Williams of Cavan 2-6 6-4 6-3. The Ladies’ Doubles Final was also a very competitive affair between Enniskillen’s Martina Boyd and Sonja Hateboer and Cavan’s Gayle Anderson and Orla Malone. Gayle had been part of that marathon match with Kate the day before. This doubles final was one of four matches Gayle played on Sunday (surely the stuff of Duracell Bunnies). The ladies from Enniskillen eventually won 2-6 6-0 6-2.

Those players who were unfortunate enough not to get through to one of the finals could at least take solace in the BBQ which was put on for visitors on Saturday and Sunday. In fact, the skills on display on the courts only slightly surpassed the culinary skills on display off the court. Indeed, at Cavan LTC, Wimbledon’s traditional strawberries and cream were replaced by Petr Vrtanik’s delicious barbequed chicken.

Well done to all players who competed over the week putting in some brilliant individual and team performances to show that tennis is alive and well in the Cavan area. If you missed the Cavan Open but would like to either take up tennis or return to the sport you played some years before, we are always looking for new members. Just call down and speak to any member about joining or visit our website,, or our Facebook or Twitter page. However, if you are just coming down to try Petr’s barbequed chicken, you will just have to wait until Cavan Open 2015!
